GERMAN GRANNIES HELP PRODUCE MODERN CROCHET BIKINIS

Two Berlin students are bringing a bit of the groovy 1970s back to the beach with the help of several German grannies – behold the crochet bikini 2.0.

The “Itzi Bitzi” bikini, designed by Eva Swoboda and Anna Berger, has been for sale in a Berlin boutique for just one week. The women found their inspiration in a 30-year-old bathing costume from Berger’s mother that has “held up astoundingly well,” said stage design student Swoboda, 26.

The two entrepreneurs from an art school in Berlin’s Weissensee district have updated the crochet bikini design with synthetic yarn, usually used for rugs, that doesn’t hold water like the old cotton models. They call it the “Crochet-Bikini 2.0.”

To find able hands for the knitting work, Swoboda and Berger placed ads in free newspapers. Sigrid Roczynski, 69, found one of these ads and telephoned the “girls,” as she calls them. “I enjoy doing handwork,” she told German news agency DPA, adding that the bikinis were difficult to master, but improve with each new set. Now there are 17 elderly women working on the 2.0 bikini. According to Berger, 28, the bikinis are well-suited for the beach. “They don’t wear out and they dry really quickly, ” she said.

The bathing suit is available in seven colors up to size 40 (US size 12, UK size 14), for €90.
